Description
Starting lifer as a single engine airliner. the Junkers Ju 52 was quickly converted to a three engines airliner. The Junkers Ju52/3M was then employed as a bomber on the "clandestine" Luftwaffe and saw combat use in the Spanish Civil War.
At the start of World War 2 the Junkers JU 52/3M was now fully utilized as a transport aircraft, its first major success being the dropping of parachutist and towing of gliders during the opening phases of the assault on the West in May1940.
The Junkers JU 52/3M, nicknamed "Aunt Ju" or"iron Anne" because of its sturdy qualities, had a long and glorious career in Germany and many other countries. It was the Lufwaffe’s transport aircraft during the entire course of World War it, was widely employed in its seaplane version and played a paramount role in the campaigns in Norway and the Mediterranean. The most important chapter of its wartime career, however, was without doubt the landing on the island of Crete.
